Consistoire Central Israélite de Belgique

Acquisition

Source of acquisition is the Consistoire Central Israélite de Belgique, Brussels. Some records were taken by the Nazis and captured from them by the Soviets; the Russian Federation subsequently restituted some of them. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the collection via the United States Holocaust Museum International Archives Project in November 2009.

Scope and Content

Records concern the Jewish communities of Brussels, Antwerp, Liege, and other Belgian cities. It contains correspondence among Jewish organizations during the German occupation, as well as documents concerning pre- and postwar Jewish and refugee organizations, synagogue records, and materials related to antisemitism.
