The paper money was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2009 by Diana Nikkels, the granddaughter of Abigael de Vries and the daughter of Ingeborg de Vries Nikkels.

Scope and Content

Occupation currency note, valued at 20 kronen, issued in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia in 1942. The Germans occupied these Czech provinces from 1939-1945, and created the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia as part of the Greater German Reich. The Czech garrison town of Theresienstadt (Terezin) was located within the Protectorate near the extended German border.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Rectangular offwhite paper currency. Face has an orange background of thin vertical lines; in the center is a medallion of a darker orange with 10 K in the middle. Over the medallion is text in brown ink, in German and Czech with the serial number below in red ink. To the right is a portrait of a young girl in braids with a rectangular frame. The border is brown and orange with flowers, leaves and fruit. Numeric denominations are located in all 4 corners. A series number is above the denomination in the lower left corner. There is orange text under the denomination in the lower left corner. The back has an orange geometric background, with orange, brown, and green borders. On the left is a large medallion with a geometric design in orange, green, and brown; the numeric denomination is printed in the center of the medallion. In the background, to the right, is a red shield with a white lion facing to its right. There is text in brown ink in German and Czech over the shield. There are numeric denominations in the right top and bottom corners.
