Acquisition
Forms part of the Claims Conference International Holocaust Documentation Archive at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This archive consists of documentation whose reproduction and/or acquisition was made possible with funding from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
Source of acquisition is the Arhivele Naţionale ale României (Romanian National Archives) in Bucharest and from various Romanian branch archives, all subordinated to the Romanian National Archives. These include the following branches of the Romanian National Archives: ANDJ Dolj, ANDJ Baia Mare, ANDJ Cluj, ANDJ Alba, ANDJ Iaşi, ANDJ-Argeș, ANDJ-Caraș-Severin, ANDJ-Dâmbovița, ANDJ- Galat, ANDJ-Giurgiu, ANDJ-Hunedoara, ANDJ-Ialomița, ANDJ-Olt, ANDJ-Satu-Mare, ANDJ-Teleorman, ANDJ-Timis. ANDJ-Vâlcea, and ANDJ-Vrancea. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the collection from the Romanian National Archives via the United States Holocaust Museum International Archives Project in December, 2008 (Microfilm reel 1-60), and in May 2010 (Microfilm reel 61- 64).
Scope and Content
This collection documents deportations of 25,000 Roma to Transnistria in 1942: contains lists of Roma to be deported; police reports concerning alleged criminal activities; petitions of deportees for repatriation; “Romanianization” of Romas’ property; requests from local officials for clarification of deportation orders; internal correspondence concerning the effect of deportations on the remaining population; decisions regarding Roma refugees from Northern (Hungarian) Transylvania; and other topics such as typhus outbreaks, “vagabondism,” “concubinism,” and mixed marriages.
