Scope and Content

"Nail" Hitler is an anti-Nazi wartime card game, with an illustrated game board, instruction sheet, and envelope that was made in Canada in 1939. The game board features a center caricature of Hitler; players roll dice to advance around the game route which includes a section called the Chamberlain Umbrella and a No Man's Land. Players are to supply their own deck of cards and chips.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

a. Brown craft paper envelope to hold game, with 3 sections divided by a diagonal line. Top left corner: red triangle with black border; in center, circle with caricature in black ink of Hitler wearing a military cap. On either side of circles are 2 sets of 2 overlapping smaller circles, 1 blue, 1 beige; to right of Hitler is 25₵ in black ink. Bottom right section: blue triangle with black border on the 2 outside edges; and 3 rows of designs: top row, set of red and white overlapping circles, a red heart, set of white and red overlapping circles; next row, black club and spade; next row, red diamond. Center has 3 lines; top, blue ink; middle, black ink; bottom, red ink. b. Square brown paper game board with 4 quadrants divided diagonally by black lines. Each quadrant is divided in half: center square has image of Hitler; other spaces have playing card names, 9 spaces total. From bottom left corner: QUEEN, black ink in middle of red heart; JACK, black ink in middle of red heart; KING, black ink in middle of red heart, Chamberlain Umbrella with black umbrella beneath text, ACE, black ink in middle of red heart, KING and QUEEN, black ink in middle of red heart, TEN, black ink in middle of red heart, fence with barbed wire NO MAN’S LAND written in black under fence.
