Scope and Content

Onscreen title reads "Generalstreik. Buergerkrieg [General strike. Civil war]" (perhaps refering to the so-called Sparticist uprising in January 1919?) Nice shots of a communist demonstration. People marching down the street, many carrying dark colored flags. Lots of children in the parade. Title at 01:10:51 reads "1920. Innere Kaempfe [1920. Inner struggle]." Huge crowd in the Lustgarten in Berlin. Dark colored (red?) flags and banners. The camera pans across the crowd. Shots of a dormant factory and soldiers in trucks. 01:11:25 title: "Kapp-Putsch." Crowds on Unter den Linden in Berlin during the March 1920 Kapp Putsch. Soldiers check papers. 01:11:39 title: "Abstimmungsfeiern in Oberschlesien und Ostpreussen [Vote holiday in Upper Silesia and East Prussia]." Crowds of people in the street, some carrying signs. One sign reads "Fort mit dem Schandfrieden! [Away with the scandalous peace!]." This protest probably took place in response to the allied-administered plebiscite in which Upper Silesia was divided between Poland and Germany, with Germany losing territory. People raise their hands and hats in the air in unison. People wave flags as they march toward the camera. A flag is raised over a building. 01:12:07 title: "Rapallo-Konferenz." The next scenes do not seem to match this title. Shot of a woman and man standing next to a ship and smiling at the camera. Another man, wearing a captain's hat, stands beside them. The next scenes are well-known aerial shots of civil unrest in Germany. People run through the streets, chased by police. Police guard a building entrance and march down a street. A crowd runs along a street with normal street traffic in the foreground. LS of a policeman roughly picking a man up off the street and shoving him. Closer views of men running; two policemen strike a man on the back as he runs.

Note(s)

  • See Film ID 202, Story 291 for some duplicate footage. The footage on Film ID 2841 contains a short demonstration sequence after the title "Abstimmungsfeiern in Oberschlesien und Ostpreussen" while Film ID 202 contains this title but not the demonstration sequence. This is a 73 meter long excerpt.
