Biographical History
Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Robert Kan and his family escaped the Nazis on May 13, 1940 and emigrated to Queens, New York via the Dutch East Indies. He received a BA in Economics from Hofstra Univeristy and worked for thirty years for the US government at the Department of Commerce, the Atomic Energy Commission, the National Science Foundation, and the American Embassy in Tokyo. After retiring from the government, he became a Certified Financial Planner. He was a lifelong Boy Scout and accomplished philatelist. He was married for 58 years to Francisca Verdoner Kan and had three daughters, Jeanette, Susan, and Eleanor.
Scope and Content
In Batavia, the former capital of the Dutch East Indies [Batavia is now Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia] EXT white stucco building from across a street. People in a wagon and riding bicycles pass from right to left. CU, building with the name Lehmann and Co. above the doorway. Black car pulls up to the side of a building and a man, dressed in white with a safari hat, exits the car. He talks to someone in the car, looks at the camera, and waves before entering the building. Another car pulls up and three men in white suits exit the car and enter the building. Again a car pulls up and another man enters the building. 01:03:02 INT, man sits at a desk counting money, briefly looks at the camera. MS, man from a different angle. Two men, one sitting at a desk, hold papers and talk to one another. VAR shots of men in the office. Three men (Batavian locals?) work in an office. One points to something in a book. Several people on the truck which is loaded with boxes. Truck sign reads "N.V. HET BATAVIA VEEM." Camera follows truck down another road and parking next to a building. Men unload boxes from the truck. 01:08:03 Warehouse. Boxes unloaded from truckbed. More INT shots of warehouse. Man paints the side of boxes. Batavian men in the warehouse, smiling at the camera. 01:09:39 EXT white stucco building with a car parked in front. Sign hangs from a tree reading: "LEHMANN & CO. AMSTERDAM BATAVIA- C.- SOERABAIA."
