Scope and Content

French artillery troops, on horseback and on foot, pass through a village. Local residents, mostly women and children, watch them pass. Close-ups of the spectators and the soldiers. The scene switches to show a train coming up to an outdoor platform. General Maurice Gamelin, commander of the General Staff of the French army, walks along the platform with a group of French officers. He drives off in a motorcade, observed by civilians. He is shown meeting with British General John Gort, Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force at the British General Headquarters in France. They pose for the camera with a group of other officers. Cars leave the grounds of the General Headquarters. 01:05:46 The removal of sacred objects from churches and synagogues in the evacuated Alsace region of France. The exterior of a church, (identified in the dope sheet as a Protestant church), then the interior, showing a stained-glass window. A man in uniform receives a sacred book from an elderly cleric. Once outside the book is shown to be the Bible (Die Bibel). Shots of the exterior and interior of a synagogue. A rabbi hands sacred objects to a soldier; in the next scene the rabbi is wearing a military uniform. He dons a tallit and exits the synagogue, followed by the other men, carrying torah scrolls. The heavy man in civilian dress is identified in the dope sheet as the Alsace Eccliastical Matters Director. They load the objects into a van. A similar scene is enacted involving a Catholic church, then all three clergymen are shown examining a map (showing where the objects are being taken?) with a man who is identified in the dope sheet as the Alsace Ecclesiastical Matters Director.
