Biographical History

According to the first Vienna Arbitration in November 1938, Moldava nad Bodvou (in Hungarian Szepsi) was annexed to the Hungarian Kingdom. The Notary Office of Moldava nad Bodvou was responsible for the management of the local agenda of Moldava nad Bodvou and its neighboring locality, Drienovec (in Hungarian Somodi). According to the Hungarian census of 1941, there were 200 Israelites who lived in Moldava nad Bodvou, and they made up 9 % of the population.

Scope and Content

The agenda of the Notary Office of Moldava nad Bodvou holds records of the local administration in the period between 1939 and 1945, including archival materials on the Anti-Jewish measures that were in force during these years. These archival sources are related mainly to the following issues: personal files related to Jewish residents, such as the number of local Jewry in 1939 (211 inhabitants), the list of Jewish doctors in Moldava nad Bodvou, files about the vetting of local doctors in 1939, official documents on Jews who converted to Christianity in Moldava nad Bodvou, as well ass the applications for the issuance of industrial licenses of Jews. Furthermore, the collection contains documents and statistical data about local agriculture, and various documents about the exclusion of Jews from the economic life of Moldava nad Bodvou.
