Biographical History
The Werbel couple had fled from Austria to Sweden in 1938. Unable to get their application for a residence permit approved despite having close relatives in Sweden and guarantees for their livelihood, they moved on and eventually ended up in Shanghai. Fanny Werbel did not survive imprisonment in the Shanghai ghetto, but her husband returned to Stockholm after the war to be reunited with his daughter and others.

The documents were found during a renovation in 1971-72 ca.
Acquisition
Obtained by the museum in 2009.
Scope and Content
The collection contains the German passports of a married older couple, Chaim and Fanny Werbel, with "J" stamps, passport photos of the couple, German ID-cards, and a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Werbel with the obituary of Rosa Lang, an advertisement for workers in the cosmetic industry, and a receipt dated April 8, 1940.
