Biographical History

The Civil Defence Section was formed on 1 July 1953 when the County Administrative Office was organized into sections. As early as 1944, the County Administrative Office established a defense department due to the 1944 Civil Defense Act.

Acquisition

Around 1960, this material was handed over to the county administrative board's civil defense section by the civil defense agencies in the county.

Scope and Content

Among other records, the Civil Defense Section's archive contains documentation concerning Holocaust refugees, around 1941-1949.

The series Ö I: a Registerkort över flyktingar inkomna til landet contains 29 boxes with more than 20,000 register cards of refugees and survivors from concentration camps, who came to Sweden from 1944 to 1946. The cards include their name, date of birth, place of residence, nationality, date of arrival and the name of the reception center where they were received, and sometimes information on transfers. On some cards there is a note if the person was Jewish, in the form of "M", "Mosaic" or "Jew". The register cards were filled out based on information assembled at refugee centers in southern Sweden and later collated at the County Administrative Board of Malmöhus County.

In Ö I: b Fotografier av flyktingar inkomna till landet there are also 16 card boxes with photographs and other documents relating to refugees.

One volume in the Series Ö I c _ Övriga liggare och register rörande flyktingar_, includes the published List of Jews who have arrived in Sweden May 1st--June 25th 1945. The list can also be found in the National Library in Stockholm as well as in a few other archives in Sweden.

Series Ö II Handlingar rörande Malmö civilförsvarsområde also contains several miscellaneous lists of refugees, reports on refugee centers, information on the preparation and administration of the reception of the refugees and survivors, as well as statistical reports.

Series ÖIII includes (in volumes no 1-3) lists of refugees, summaries and reports from refugee centers and medical records. Series Ö IV, ÖV, ÖVI, ÖVII and ÖVIII contain similar records from other areas in the district.
