Extent and Medium

The oral archive contains interviews recorded on various formats: magnetic tapes, audio cassettes (60 and 90 minutes), VHS and HS videotapes, digital recordings.

Archival History

The interviews were conducted starting in 1997 as part of several oral history projects, some of which focus on the Holocaust in northwestern Transylvania, the image of Jews, or the fate of Roma deported to Transnistria.

Scope and Content

The collection includes 1756 oral history interviews. Of these, about 90 relate to the Holocaust (55 to the Holocaust in northwestern Transylvania and 33 to the fate of deported Roma in Transnistria). The Institute of Oral History in Cluj Napoca has developed several oral history projects over the last 25 years, dealing with the following topics: holocaust in northwestern Transylvania, World War II, anti-communist resistance in Romania, ethnic and religious minorities, everyday life under communism , the 1989 revolution, the war in Afghanistan, gold mining etc. There have been several projects on oral history regarding the Holocaust. -project "Holocaust of the Jews in Northwest Transylvania between Memory and History. Oral History Research", funded between 2006 and 2008. Its aim was to work through the traumatic memory of the Holocaust among both survivors and eyewitnesses of the deportation of the Jews in the summer of 1944. Oral history interviews were conducted with survivors, their descendants, and other direct witnesses. -"Holocaust Memorial for the Jews of Transylvania. Information and Documentation Study for the Establishment of a Holocaust Museum in Cluj Napoca" funded between 2009 and 2011. Its main objectives were: 1. creation of a corpus of documents containing the legal and normative acts from the period 1940-1944 concerning the socio-economic life of the Transylvanian Jews, the ghettoization and the deportation orders of the Jews; 2. creation of a pictorial archive (family photos, letters, personal documents, etc.); 3. creation of a museum for the Transylvanian Jews. Within the framework of the Cluj Institute of Oral History, various individual projects were carried out, such as the Holocaust in Northwest Transylvania (Ioana Cosman); The Jews in the Sighet Region (1918-1989) between History and Memory (Ileana Sauliuc), Anti-Semitism in the Collective Imaginary in 20th Century Romania (Cosmina Paul), The Image of the Jews from Maramureș in the Collective Memory (Aura Comănescu-Pintea). Currently, of the Institute's 1756 interviews, 55 relate to the Holocaust in northwestern Transylvania. In addition, between 2014 and 2016, the Institute conducted the project "The untold story. The oral history of the Roma in Romania." Of these, 31 interviews were conducted with Roma survivors of the deportations in Transnistria.

Existence and Location of Originals

  • The website does not contain transcripts of the interviews. However, the site contains short fragments (5-10 minutes) of 12 interviews from various projects of the Institute.
