Scope and Content

Freedom of workship returns to Metz. U.S. soldiers and civilians of liberated Metz, soldiers and civilians of liberated Metz, France, attend religious services held for the first time in four years at the Metz Synagogue. Private Jacob Katzman of New York City adressing the congregation. During the Nazi occupation of the bastion city of Eastern France, the synagogue was used as a warehouse, religious scrolls being removed and the alter defiled. The third U.S. Army wrosted Metz from the enemy, November 22, 1944, capturing more than 3,500 prisoners.
