Scope and Content

The file consists of typewritten letters and notes between the South African Jewish Board of Deputies and the Jewish Central Information Office, Amsterdam, about the background research into the claims stated in Manie Maritz's book "Mil Lewe en Strewe" (My Life and Struggle) and Anti-Semitic claims made in the Canadian publication "the Key to the Mystery". Most of the correspondence dates between May to September 1939 and refers to Manie Maritz's trial in Windhoek where he was found guilty and fined 75 pounds. One letter refers to Dr. Friediger, Chief Rabbi of Copenhagen, regarding several topics of the Old Testament and the Talmud that he analyses. It also includes a list of mainly Anti-Semitic books that where sent to South Africa. One letter refers to the judgement of the Zurich Court on March 16, 1939. It also mentions the book Biarritz by Sir John Retcliffe (pseudonym of the German writer Hermann Ottomar Friedrich Goedsche), the Protocols of the Elder of Zion, Mary Karadja and the Bern Trial. Some letters have been translated into German.
