Would-be friends of Nazis and their Failure
Extent and Medium
2 electronic resources (35, 3 pages)
Scope and Content
The file is a compilation of quotations and excerpts from various Nazi publications and the British Press on Germany by "friends" or organizations with a positive view on Germany. A range of articles report on the Albanian King Zog, in early articles he is portrayed in a positive light. During the 2. World War he is considered an Anti-fascist and a friend of Jews and Freemasons. The next quotations deal with comments by Adolf Hitler to leaders of the "Stahlhelm", a German veteran's organization. Another topic is the situation of the Center party in 1933 and its consent for the "Ermächtigungsgesetz" (enabling act 1933). Fritz Thyssen is quoted and in a different article, the confiscation of all his assets is announced. The fate of the priest Martin Niemöller is discussed in a Swiss newspaper. Further articles portray the Polish Foreign minister Colonel Beck in an increasingly negative light towards the beginning of the war (1935-1939). Prime Minister Daladier is quoted in a series of articles on the cordial relationship between Germany and France. After 1939 the articles portray him negatively. The next articles deal with the arrest of members of the Bayerische Volkspartei and its disbandment. The remaining articles are from the British Press and portray Germany in a positive light. Authors are G. Ward Price, Lord Londonderry, letters from the editor of the Manchester Guardian, Viscount Rothermere, Lord Astor, Lord Mount Temple, Lord Ponsonby, Sir Ian Hamilton, and the association "Link". Each quotation lists the publisher, date, and sometimes the author.
