Scope and Content

The file contains a month by month survey of the Jews' situation in several European countries as well as in Palestine and of the refugees' problem all over the world. The first files are letters from the Jewish Central Information Office about the Jews in Italy. The other documents report about the Jews in Romania, the Jewish emigration policy and the official measures taken in favor of or against the Jews ; in the Baltic States and especially in Lithuania, about the virulent traders' anti-Jewish propaganda despite the official government position against anti-Jewish steps, the deteriorating economic situation of the Jews and the pogrom in Vilna in November, 1939 ; in Hungary, about the official anti-Jewish measures, policy and behavior ; in Poland about the anti-Jewish steps, the persecution of the Jewish population, the cooperation with the German authorities, the terrible situation of the Jews and the refugees at the no-man's-land between Germany and Poland and the building of the Warsaw ghetto under control of a Nazi commissar ; in Italy, about the racial policy, the anti-Jewish measures and laws and in Palestine, about the terrorist attacks and the Arab rebellion, the negotiations with the British authorities about the Jewish immigration and the illegal immigration to Palestine. The files also report about the refugees' problem and the Jewish emigration, the establishment of a refugee camp and financial aid, and the meetings of the Intergovernmental Committee for Refugees.
