Repatriation of the Balts
Extent and Medium
2 online resources (1, 11 pages)
Scope and Content
The file contains information on the resettlement of German Balts to Nazi Germany. From 1939 the Nazi regime started transferring all ethnic Germans from Latvia and Estonia. The documents describe the hardship of the travel to Germany. For the men and women the move meant leaving everything behind. Furthermore, the journey to Germany was very hard due to the extremely low temperatures. Nazi affiliated newspapers used the transfer for propaganda purposes, arguing that the German Balts answered the call of their "Fuehrer" in spite of the difficult circumstances.
