Scope and Content

The files contain information on the work and origin of the Gestapo. The Gestapo was established in 1933. Members of the Gestapo had to be of a certain age, be part of the NSDAP and have acquired certain skills and distinctions. Through the years the Gestapo gained more and more power through measures like protective custody. According to the documents its purpose was to investigate, monitor and fight all efforts and acts that were considered dangerous for national safety and the unity of the people. The Gestapo enforced the many anti-Semitic decrees. Furthermore, not reporting an illegal leaflet or being a member of one of numerous forbidden organizations would lead to an arrest.
