  • Charles Joseph Coward known as the "Count of Auschwitz", was a British soldier captured during World War II who rescued Jews from Auschwitz and smuggled himself into Auschwitz for one night, subsequently testifying about his experience at the Nuremberg Trials and the IG Farben Trial. After the war two books were written about his story: 'The Password is Courage' by John Castle and 'The Man who Broke into Auschwitz' by Denis Avey, which was adapted into a 1962 film of the same name -- (Wikipedia). According to the Daily Telegraph he also gave evidence at the Eichmann Trial -- (Daily Telegraph, 24.12.76)
