  • Ernst Buchner was a German art historian and the director of the Bavarian State Painting Collections. During World War II he assisted the Gestapo in the confiscation of Jewish collections. He played a crucial role in the removal of the Ghent altarpiece to Germany. as a result of these he was dismissed from his position in 1945, but was reinstalled in 1953 -- (from Jewish Museum Berlin)
