Scope and Content

The file is the first part of the biography of Henry Hellmann, a social democrat, from Berlin. He grew up in Breslau in a social democratic household with a Jewish father and Christian mother. Both parents left their respective faith before he was born. During the first World War the family moved to Berlin. He witnessed the Spartacus uprising and the Kapp-Putsch while he went to High school in Lichterfelde, Berlin and later to a boarding school in Wynecken called Wickersdorf. He started to work at the socialist publishing house in Breslau. After starting an affair with a free spirit and failing to continue his studies, his parents made him return to Berlin where he studied economics and started to work in publishing. He was present at the May 1, 1929 unrest as a reporter. An index of persons mentioned in the biography is included.
