Scope and Content

The file is the third part of a collection of handwritten letters, documents and papers of a German-Jewish merchant family named Meyer from Gruenberg in Silesia from 1822 to 1935. Correspondence include letters to family and friends in Berlin, Hamburg, Breslau, Königsberg, Görlitz and Glatz beginning in 1841 and ending in 1935. Many of these letters are addressed to Sophie Meyer-Berlin, the wife of Isaak Meyer. Most addressees belong to the Jewish community. Among the documents are "naturalization certificates" (Bürgerbrief) for Jakobi Salomon Meyer (1822) and Joseph Meyer (1851). Both swear their oath not to God Almighty but to Adonai, the God of Israel. Further the collection consists of marriage licenses, last wills and bankruptcy papers from 1844.
