Scope and Content
The file is the first part of a series of files containing documents on the situation of Jews in Bulgaria during its time as an Ally of Nazi Germany. This file contains diplomatic correspondence between the German Foreign Ministry and the German representatives in in Sofia regarding the treatment of Jews in Bulgaria. Written between July 1942 and March 1943, the documents include letters and telegrams dealing with negotiations between Germany and the Bulgarian government regarding the deportation of Bulgarian Jews and of Jews of foreign nationality. Furthermore, the correspondence deals with the Bulgarian position on Germany’s politics of persecution, the “Consistory of the Jews in Bulgaria”, and various international initiatives to rescue Jewish children from Bulgaria.
