Scope and Content
The file contains the copy of a reprinted article entitled “The U.S. Negro” and originally published in the TIME Magazine in 1953. The reprint had been distributed by the “Community Relations Service” as part of the United States Department of Justice. The article deals with the social and economic achievements of the African American population within the recent years. First, the article highlights the growing signs of prosperity, such as the use of private television and cars, as the result of more African Americans being employed in the industrial sector. Furthermore, the article describes the different situations of African Americans in the Northern and the Southern parts of the country mainly regarding the politics of segregation. Finally, the article sees the question of the African American integration not as the result of economic and social problems, but as a problem which calls for a moral solution and the ethic development of American Society.
