Scope and Content

The file contains the copy of a booklet published by the United States Information Agency in 1950 or 1951. The booklet consists of a first introducing text to the situation of African American people in the United States. The second part of the book presents pictures aiming to show the improvement of the African Americans’ social situation through professional, cultural, and social initiatives. The biography of public figures of African American background is presented as a result of an ever improving situation. The booklet describes the discrimination against the African American population in the United States as a contradiction to the Nation’s democratic principles. In the same time, the democratic political system is being described as an instrument to overcome this discrimination against African American people through education and legislation.
