Scope and Content
The file contains the essay “On the Holocaust” written as “A critique of the Treatment of the Holocaust in History Textbooks Accompanied by an Annotated Bibliography” by Henry Friedlander, and published in 1973 by the “Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith”. In his essay, the Historian Henry Friedlander critically discusses the way recent books on German and European History written by well-known authors deal with the Holocaust and its victims. After stating that most authors bypass details on the Holocaust by various means, Friedlander argues that they refuse to acknowledge the Holocaust as a genocide, thus continuing to blur the actual events as something that goes beyond the imaginable. In order to promote further research on the Holocaust, Friedlander provides an annotated bibliography on “Reference Materials”, “Anti-Semitism and the Third Reich”, “The Catastrophe: Histories and Interpretations”, “Ghettos and Camps”, “Eyewitness Accounts”, and “World Reactions”.
