Scope and Content
The file contains a draft translation from the Yiddish original of the proceedings against Herbert Schulz, Funktionshäftling (prisoner functionary or kapo) before a court of Arbitration. The court was composed of Rabbi Jacobson, Chairman, Dr. Nella Rost and Mrs. Fanny Kagansky. The plaintiff was Mr. Uri Herzberg and defender Mr. Sekulis. As witnesses Mr. Galanther and Mr. Berthold Kahn were called. The transcript presents the events of this court session. First the minutes of the last meeting were read by Rabbi Jakobson and the parties were asked to pledge themselves to respect the verdict of the court. Then Mr. Galanther was heard and explained his experience in 1943 with Herbert Schulz. Schulz was accused of being the reason for the deportation of the Latvian Jews of the camp and his brutality against other Jews, he was also dreaded by both Germans and Jews in the camp. On the other hand Schulz was looking after children, old and weak people, as testimonies confirm. The Court of Honor passed the resolution, that according to the general impression derived from the evidence placed, the accused has been found guilty of brutalities and actions unworthy of a Jew. On the other hand, the Court is of the opinion that the accused, in some cases, has acted in the conviction that this brutality would save the victims from far worse maltreatments.
