Scope and Content

The file contains a report regarding the book of Sven Hedin, who was a Swedish geographer, topographer, explorer, photographer, travel writer, and illustrator of his own works. The Jewish Central Information Office published and distribute a report based on the information from the book of Hedin, furthermore they tried to advertise his book. In 1937 Hedin refused to publish his book "Deutschland und der Weltfrieden" (Germany and World Peace) in Germany because the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda insisted on the deletion of Nazi-critical passages. But in this report it can be read that the propaganda machine in Germany was already using his criticism on the Nazi regime and praised his book as an extraordinary work of an international worker. The criticism of Hedin was explained as an usual misunderstanding of Nazi Germany from an foreigner, as the völkischer Beobachter put it: a foreigner will never see things in Germany as a German, therefore they wont understand." The Jewish Central Information Office tried in their report to emphasize and dicuss Nazi-critical passages and additional information in his book. Secondary also information about several other books regarding the fascism in Italy and National Socialism in Germany have been given.
