Scope and Content
The file contains a speech made by Sir Winston Churchill to the European Assembly in August 1949, in Strassbourg. Churchill discusses the necessity of creating a European Assembly and the hiopes that this assembly may be the beginning of a single, unifired Eruope. Such a unified Europe is necessary to stand in the way of tyranny in all its forms, and to secure a truly free and independent future in which Europe continues being a world leader for Democracy. Such a future does not contradict the interests of any single country, but supports them. Additionally, the file contains two newspaper articles, written about the "war spirit" in Britain and war associations with Russia. The first article decries the lapse of fighting spirit in Britain, and offers solidarity with Russia and the resistance to the Nazi invasion, followed by the necessity ofa united political front which includes the Labour party. The second article, also from The Forum, responds to the previous one, demanding improvement in the lives of the working class and seeing it as a necessary element of reinvigorating the fighting spirit of the people.
