Scope and Content
The file contains unsorted press cuttings from 1936 till 1937 concerning political topics in Europe. The informations were published in different British newspapers, like the Daily Telegraph and the Gardian. The press cuttings are written in English and concerning a diverse range of political topics. For example the 'Austrian and Hungarian Comment on Mussolini's Step', where in December 1937 Italy left the League of Nations. Some of the Austrian press argued that much support for the Italien decision can be given and very little against it. Other voices in Austria report that the League of Nations gave valuable help to many States and that in its committees it solved many problems of currency, economic and science. Also the Hungarian comments to the departure of Italy from the Leage are diverse. Some discribe that as a warning and at the same time as a lesson for those who follow a rigid policy and an uncompromissing attitude. As the Italian action is not a threat but a way of drawing the attention of the powers to a problem which needs solving urgently. The article 'Hitlers new Attacks on Democracy', deals with the speech Hitler gave in October 1936 at the opening for the winter help campaign at the Deutschland Hall. In his speech he sharply attacked the "democratic liars" in other countries and made clear that in his Winter campaign it is not given to the poor from the rich, but German people help each other. An other article with the headline 'No dictator for Belgium', deals with the question if Belgium would collapse into an dictatorship or would succeed in keeping a Government based on freedom. The prime minister M. Van Zeeland claimed that what have been achieved in Belgium had been achieved without a dictatorship and like that it should be continued. Nonetheless the state had to be reformed so as to give new strength and national unity. In addition many other political topics have been reported by the British newspapers.
