Scope and Content

The file contains a research realized by the Aide aux Israélites Victimes de la Guerre in Belgium regarding the resettelment and transit of Jews in 1945. After the war a lot of Jews were resettled to Belgium or used the country for a transit. This caused a lot of orgizational work for the relief organizations in Belgium. The Office national des anciens combattants et victimes de guerre (ONAC), the Aide aux Israélites Victimes de la Guerre (IVG), the Intergovernmental Committe on Refugees, the American Joint Distribution Committee and others created special committees concerning the needs of the arriving Jews. As they were two cathegories, arriving and transit, the needs differ from each other. For example arriving Jews were picked up and got help with their resettlement, money was delivered, kosher kitchens were established and medical center were build. Besides places were created were people could recover. Organizations like the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and the Queen Elizabeth of Belgium were included in the help movement in Belgium. The statistics show that 25441 Jews were deported to concentration camps and just 1996 came back to Belgium. Also 2000 political prisoners came back, they were deported because they belonged to the resistance against the Nazis. Further statistics show how many Belgium Jews were deported from other countries, like France.
