Scope and Content

The file contains a corrspondence between the 'Board of Deputies of British Jews' and the 'Wiener Library, Department of Contemporary Jewish history' and the 'Statistical & Demographic United' ragarding a statistical research on Anglo-Jewry. The Statistical & Demographic United' established by the 'Board of Deputies of British Jews' has been functioning since 1966 and first steps have been taken towards centralising, and compeling on a national basis, data which are readily available from various communal offices. As already a few local surveys, limited to particular areas, have been made, the object of this working paper is to help plan the future work of the Unit by setting out some background information on methods and research. Special attention should be given to a possible national sample survey of Jewish households and to the problems that such a study would entail. The 'Statistical & Demographic United' adressed their first working papers to organisations for further comments or queries and explains furthermore their research methods and ideas. Furthermore they attempt to estimate, for each possible approach, both the financial costs of the research projects and the length of time that must be expected to lapse, before results are forthcoming.
