Scope and Content
The file contains a document, which deals with the Dreyfus Affair. The Dreyfus Affair was a political scandal that divided the Third French Republic from 1894 until its resolution in 1906. The affair is often seen as a modern and universal symbol of injustice, and it remains one of the most notable examples of a complex miscarriage of justice and antisemitism. The scandal began in December 1894 with the treason conviction of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a young Alsatian French artillery officer of Jewish descent. Sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly communicating French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris, Dreyfus was imprisoned on Devil's Island in French Guiana, where he spent nearly five years. The documents discusses furthermore the role of the church during that time, as well as its hatred against Judaism. As it has been argued, Christian antisemitism has been attributed to numerous factors including theological differences, competition between Church and Synagogue, the Christian drive for converts, decreed by the Great Commission, misunderstanding of Jewish beliefs and practices, and a perceived Jewish hostility toward Christians. These attitudes were reinforced in Christian preaching, art and popular teaching for two millennia, containing contempt for Jews, as well as statutes which were designed to humiliate and stigmatize Jews. Additionally a handwritten document from 1895 is attached. The continuation of the document is a letter written for Pyotr Alexandrovich Chikhachyov, who was a Russian naturalist and geologist. He authored geographical and geological descriptions of the Altai, Xinjiang (1845), and Asia Minor (1853-1869). Also a document about alleged secrets about Judaism is attached in the memoirs of H. Sliesberg.
