Scope and Content

The file contains parts of the self-written biography of Maurice Joly. He finished writing it on the 4th of November 1870 and it was published in the same year. In his biography he writes about his grandfather, his father, Philippe Lambert Joly and his mother, Florentine Corbare. Discrepancies appear with his date of birth. Even Joly contradicts himself there, it is believed that he was born in 1829 or 1830. In detail he describes his life and his passion for politics and literature. His last writings attracted a lot of attention, especially the French Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu ou la politique de Machiavel au XIXe siècle. Which was written in protest against the regime of Napoleon III and for which he was punished by the courts.
