Scope and Content

The author describes the “Kirchenkampf” in Germany during the National Socialist dictatorship not as a fight between church and state, but for the question of theological existence. It concerned everyone: theologians, experts and especially lay people. The conflict between “German Christians” and the “Bekennende Kirche” (Confessing church) was theological not political. The differences in the believe systems is explained through examples. The question of obedience to authority in a Christian framework is discussed. The position of the evangelical church towards Anti-Semitism and persecution of Jews is addressed and criticized.
