Scope and Content

The intent of the booklet is to refute collective punishment of all Germans for the crimes committed by the Nazis. It differentiates between the various groups which became Nazis – the naïve idealists, the failures of society, profit hunters, the uneducated, and the "vile elements" that hate all decency. In contrast to these groups, admiration must be shown for those who stood firm against the "forces of evil" and the quiet, everyday heroes, which didn't actively resist but tried to prevent their immediate surroundings from becoming tainted by collaboration. Based on reports by the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, the reaction to the removal of crosses in the churches in 1941 is discussed and analyzed. Documents ordering the removal and the reactions of the local population (especially in the countryside) are included and summarized.
