He notes that he would have written earlier but there was a five-day postal strike. Reports a slow recovery from his operation; chewing and swallowing are still hard but his speech is almost restored with the help of a "mouth-piece". He cannot say when he will be able to resume work, and he has had to spend a lot of money on healthcare.

Asks if there has been any change for Sam after the death of his mother. Minna [sister of Martha Bernays] is and "invalid" and has been absent since May. Eli Bernays, who recently died, may have left almost a million dollars to Anna [Bernays?].
