Biographical History
The Education Aid Society was founded in 1896, the outcome of a set of resolutions of the education committee of the Maccabeans calling for an organisation to enable Jewish children of promise in elementary schools to obtain higher education in secondary schools. The Society aimed to investigate and advise on cases of highly talented, needy students and to provide loans to enable them to train for professions or the pursuit of art.
Scope and Content
Minute books of the general committee, 1896-1946, of the musical committee, 1909-38, and of the case sub-committee, 1913-14. Cash books, 1911-46; special fund account, 1930-9; ledgers, arranged alphabetically, 1938-50; analysis of income and expenditure, 1910-29; papers relating to the Henry Lewis Bequest and Fund; memorandum on the financial position, 1937. Case files (approx. 300 files). Correspondence files, 1926-40; applications, 1939-51; agreements and record cards of students assisted 1908 onwards. Annual reports, 1898-1936, 1939-46 and 1947-8.
Conditions Governing Access
The Special Collections Division is available for anyone to use, regardless of whether you are attached to an academic institution. Access to the Archives and Manuscripts and Rare Books reading room, however, is by prior appointment to access the manuscript material. See our for more details.
