Biographical History
An offspring of an old family, Leonard Nathaniel Goldsmid Montefiore (1889-1961) was a representative of liberal Anglo Jewry. After becoming acquainted with Alfred Wiener he played an eminent role in re-shaping The Wiener Library after the Second World War. He served as its president as well as chairman of its board.
Scope and Content
Comprising handwritten and typewritten letters the correspondence centres on various subjects related to The Wiener Library’s everyday business including: discussions of numerous administrational, financial, and legal issues, but also arrangements for a reception on Montefiore’s 70th birthday. After his passing further correspondence with other individuals focuses on issues related to Montefiore’s estate and the preparation of a memorial book by the Library.
Contained are drafts of articles by Monterfiore, internal memos on meetings with him, a biographical piece about and a photograph of him, a court document from a legal case of the Library with antisemite Vladimir Lazek Borin, and some other undated documents.
