Biographical History

A Landgericht (LG) is a district court for ordinary jurisdiction in the federal states of Germany. As such, it serves as mid-level court for private and criminal law. The hearing of restitution cases as well as criminal proceedings of Nazi perpetrators are assigned to its remit.

Scope and Content

The correspondence centres on requests by the LG Stuttgart’s restitution department regarding Nazi crimes committed in Poland (mainly the ghettoization of Jews), but also the fate of Hungarian Jews who were sent as forced labourers to Austria. In 1953, an LG official visited The Wiener Library.

Contained are further correspondences with the Stuttgart district attorney, the International Tracing Service (ITS) in Bad Arolsen, and the Żydowsky Instytut Historyczny (ZHI) in Warsaw.
