Biographical History

The Kommission zur Erforschung der Geschichte der Frankfurter Juden is an officially appointed expert panel tasked with supporting and publishing research works on the history of the Jewry of Frankfurt am Main. Established in 1961, it had then been formed of German scholars as well as members of the London based committee ‘100 Years Jewish Frankfurt’. The latter was a group of former Jewish-German refugees with ties to Frankfurt am Main, working on a recent history of Frankfurt’s Jewry. Alfred Wiener had been a member of the committee as well as the Kommission.

Scope and Content

Comprising letters by and with numerous individuals, the correspondence documents the activities of the committee ‘100 Years Jewish Frankfurt’, the formation of the Kommission, and the contribution of The Wiener Library to the latter’s first publication, an edition of documents on the history of Frankfurt’s Jewry in the years 1933-45.

Included subjects are among others: arrangements by the committee for lecture by journalist Rudolf Heilbrunn and efforts to procure his source material after he left the project; the committee’s efforts in gathering material and personal accounts on the history of Frankfurt’s Jewry; Alfred Wiener’s contribution to the work of the committee and the Kommission; and the Kommission’s provision with various source material by The Wiener Library, including several eyewitness testimonies from its eyewitness testimony project.

Beside letters, the correspondence contains minutes of meetings of the London based committee as well as the 2nd meeting of the Kommission in Frankfurt, and a public call by the committee for subject related material.
