Biographical History
The Jüdische Gemeinde Berlin is the Jewish community of Berlin. From its re-establishment after the Second World War until the German re-unification it comprised the community in West Berlin only.
Scope and Content
The correspondence, mainly with the community’s chairman Heinz Galinski, the first president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, covers a wide variety of topics. This includes recurring visits of Alfred Wiener to Berlin since 1955; the opening of a new community centre there in 1959; reactions to antisemitic incidents in West Germany 1959/1960; the exchange of published and unpublished materials (partly for an exhibition); the processing of information requests and the Library’s options of (financial) support by the Jewish communities in Germany.
