Biographical History

Prof. Dr. Max Horkheimer (1895-1973) was an eminent Jewish-German philosopher and sociologist who was famous for his work on critical theory, a school of thought, and as a leading representative of the Frankfurt School of social research.

Scope and Content

Documenting the close relationship between Horkheimer and Alfred Wiener the correspondence concerns various subjects including: exchange and discussion of published materials; support of The Wiener Library’s eyewitness testimony project and Horkheimer’s Library membership; coordination of meetings; and a publication of documents of Holocaust victim Philipp Manes. Contained is a memo by Alfred Wiener on a meeting with Horkheimer (November 20, 1960) and the latter’s view on German youth.
