Biographical History
The Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland (EKD) is a federation of today 20 Lutheran, Reformed and United churches. It is the leading representative body of Protestantism in Germany. The Kommission für die Geschichte des Kirchenkampfes in der nationalsozialistischen Zeit (Commission for the History of the Church Struggle in the Nazi Era) was founded in 1955. Since the 1970s it serves as general commission for the History of the Evangelical Church.
Scope and Content
The correspondence centres on a conference on the Church Struggle in the Nazi Era organized by the commission. The invitation of Alfred Wiener, the finding of a topic for conference proceedings, organizational details, and the subsequent distribution of Wiener’s conference proceeding among the participants and other interested individuals are the main subjects. Beside letters the correspondence contains a list of participants of this conference, a copy of Wiener’s conference paper, and a press statement of the EKD on a wave of antisemitic incidents in West Germany 1959/60.
