Founded by the Archbishop and the Chief Rabbi in 1942, the Council of Christians and Jews is a British organisation aiming to fight Antisemitism and similar forms of intolerance in the UK. The Council’s official patron is Queen Elisabeth II. See Braybrooke, M., Children of one God: History of the Council of Christians and Jews, London, Vallentine Mitchell & Co., 1991.

Scope and Content

Documenting the long-term association of the Council and the Library the correspondence deals with various issues including invitations for public talks and conferences, letters of condolence, subscriptions to the Library, the lending of published material and information requests, and Library related articles in the Council’s periodical Common Ground. Other letters concern arrangements for the International Christian Jewish Conference 1962. Beside letters a memo on a meeting with Wallace Bell, an undated list on books about Jewish contributions to civilization, and several invitation cards or fliers are contained.
