Biographical History
Established in the then Polish city of Vilnius in 1925, the Yivo Institute for Jewish Research is an organisation for the study of Eastern European Jewry and the Yiddish language. Since 1940 its headquarters are in New York.
Scope and Content
Correspondence primarily regarding the procurement and sending of published as well as unpublished material. The latter includes, for instance, a YIVO request for Warsaw Ghetto photographs from The Wiener Library’s photo archive (1962). A further recurring subject is The Wiener Library’s involvement in a joint documentary project of YIVO and Yad Vashem, a bibliographical series on published and archival source material on the Holocaust starting in 1954.
