Biographical History
Established in 1948 the United Restitution Organisation (URO) was an international organisation under private law. Its remit was to provide legal aid service for the restitution claims of victims of the Nazi persecution living outside Germany.
Scope and Content
Documenting a close cooperation and the process of mutual gathering and dissemination of information the correspondence deals with various issues. Recurring subjects are: restitution related enquiries on individual fates as well as on certain or regional aspects of the Nazi persecution and expropriation of Jews; endeavours and difficulties to ensure sufficient monetary support by other Jewish organisations, mainly the Claims Conference; the discussion of current political and compensation related affairs in Germany; aspects of post-war lives of (German) refugees and Holocaust survivors; URO support for The Wiener Library’s eyewitness testimony project.
Containing numerous letters with various other individuals and institutions Hans Reichmann, Kurt Friedländer, and Fritz Goldschmidt are the main correspondents for URO London. Aside from letters the material includes an URO Bulletin about the Nuremberg Laws, WL memos (1955), a list of URO London executive council members (12.03.1957), cards, and a copy of a protocol (1960).
