Biographical History
Prof. Dr. Martin (Meir) Plessner (1900-1973) was an Israeli orientalist of German descent. After teaching at several universities he emigrated to Palestine in 1933. See Walk, J., Kurzbiographien zur Geschichte der Juden 1918-1945, Munich et. al., K. G. Saur, 1988, p. 299.
Scope and Content
Illustrating the friendly association between Martin Plessner and The Wiener Library, especially Alfred Wiener, the correspondence deals with various issues. Fields of discussion are: the work of common acquaintances in Israel (mostly German immigrants); the activities of certain remembrance institutions like Yad Vashem and the Ghetto Fighter Kibbutz; and Plessner’s own scholarly work. The latter includes the attendance at conferences in Europe, the contribution of an article for a publication in Germany, and a dismissive review of Eva Reichmann’s study on Antisemitism.
Beside few letters to third persons the correspondence contains two transcripts of articles written by Plessner.
