Archival History
Several members of the Weil family immigrated to England just before the outbreak of the Second World War: Kurt Weil, his wife Edith and daughter Gabriele, Edith’s brother-in-law Oswald Wolff and Oswald’s son Heinz. The family was also linked to the Saalfelds, Rothschilds and Herzfelds.
Some family members remained in Germany, while others immigrated elsewhere. Kurt Weil’s sister Dr Else Weil- who was the first wife of author Kurt Tucholsky- went to France, but was ultimately interned and deported to Auschwitz, where she died. This collection of family papers, including correspondence between different branches of the family and personal records, was donated by Heinz Wolff’s son Laurence after the death of Gabriele Weil [1930-2019].
