Biographical History
The Freie Wissenschaftliche Vereigingen was a liberal student organisation created in 1881 to combat the growing antisemitism in German universities in the post-emancipatory era. Whilst membership wasn't restricted to Jews and identification with Jewish culture and traditions was discouraged, in fact the overwhelming membership of the organisation remained Jewish. Chapters of the organisation emerged in a number of German cities including Berlin and Breslau. The organisation re-emerged in the aftermath of World war II. Survivng members were resident all over the world and referred to each other as Bundesbrueder.
