Biographical History
Leo Baeck (1873-1956) was a German rabbi, scholar and international leader of Liberal Judaism. In Berlin he had presided over the largest Jewish community in Germany from 1905 onwards. Deported to Theresienstadt in 1943 he continued his community work as a member of the council of Elders. Upon liberation Baeck moved to London and became president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. The Leo Baeck Institute with branches in New York, London and Jerusalem is named after him. Comprising handwritten and typewritten letters the correspondence documents the close association between Baeck and The Wiener Library. It deals with various issues including among others: Baeck’s advice for the Library in certain matters; his 80th anniversary and the presentation of a on this occasion; some issues following his passing in 1956.
